How to Create a Montessori Room at Home

A Montessori room is not about buying a lot of things. It is about arranging a space so your child can reach, choose and do things on their own. Here is how to start, even in a small room.

  1. Think at your child’s eye level. Low shelves, a low mirror, a floor bed or mattress and hooks they can reach let your child move around the room without asking for help.
  2. Use open, low shelves. Display a few toys on a shelf instead of hiding them in a big box. Children choose more easily and tidy up more easily when everything has a visible place.
  3. Offer fewer toys, and rotate them. Keep six to eight activities out and store the rest. Swap them every couple of weeks and old toys feel new again.
  4. Leave free floor space. A soft mat, a climbing triangle or a rocker needs room to be used. An open floor invites crawling, stretching, climbing and play.
  5. Choose natural materials. Wood, cotton and wool feel good in small hands and keep the room calm and warm. Soft colours help the room stay peaceful.
  6. Put books where they can be seen. A forward-facing bookshelf shows the covers, so your child picks a book on their own.
  7. Give your child real, child-sized tools. A learning tower, a small table and chair, a little broom or a pitcher let your child take part in daily life.
You do not need to do everything in one weekend. Start with one corner, watch how your child uses it, then adjust.
