On a regular bookshelf, children only see the spines. On a forward-facing bookshelf, they see the covers, and a cover is what makes a child want to pick up a book.
Why it matters. When books are at your child’s level and the covers are visible, your child chooses on their own. They turn pages, look at pictures and come back to favourites again and again, which builds a love of reading from the earliest age.
Tips for a reading corner
- Show only five to eight books at a time, and rotate them every week or two.
- Pick sturdy board books for babies and a mix of picture books for toddlers.
- Add a soft cushion or a small chair beside the shelf to make a cosy spot.
- Place the shelf in a calm area, away from noisy toys and screens.
- Include books about everyday life, animals and nature, as well as favourite stories.
Make it a habit. Read together at the same time every day, such as after the bath or before bed. When your child starts bringing you books from the shelf, you will know it is working.
Good to know. Secure the shelf against a wall, and keep heavy books on the lower level.
