In a Montessori home, toys are not thrown into a big basket. They live on a low, open shelf where your child can see them, choose one and put it back when finished. It is a small change that makes a big difference.
Why it works. When everything has its own place, your child learns order, independence and responsibility. They can pick an activity without asking, and tidying up becomes a natural part of playing.
How to set it up
- Choose the right height so your child can reach every shelf on their own.
- Display only a few activities, about six to eight, with space between them.
- Place each toy in a small tray or basket so it forms one complete activity.
- Group similar things together, such as puzzles on one shelf and stacking toys on another.
- Rotate the toys every couple of weeks to keep your child interested.
Grow with your child. The same shelf works for a baby’s first objects, a toddler’s puzzles and a preschooler’s art supplies, and you only change what is on it.
Good to know. Place the shelf against a wall, keep it uncluttered, and leave a little free floor space in front of it so your child can sit and play.
